Garlic size is usually communicated by the diameter of the whole bulb. A clear size specification helps suppliers sort consistently and helps buyers select the right product for retail, foodservice, wholesale or processing.
How diameter is measured
The bulb is checked across its widest point. Export programs commonly use half-centimeter bands, although the exact band and permitted tolerance must be agreed between buyer and supplier.
Common reference bands
- Below 4.0 cm: processing or price-sensitive programs
- 4.0–4.5 cm: economy or bulk channels
- 4.5–5.0 cm: mainstream retail
- 5.0–5.5 cm: foodservice and retail
- 5.5–6.0 cm: premium retail presentation
- 6.0–6.5 cm and above: jumbo or customized programs
Why uniformity matters
A narrow, controlled grade produces a neater retail display and more predictable pack counts. Wider mixed-size programs may offer better value for processing or wholesale use.
What to write into the order
State the minimum and maximum diameter, measurement method, allowed tolerance, defect limits, packing weight and inspection procedure. Photos or approved samples can help align expectations, but the written contract remains essential.
